Deja view!
Well, I’m back at home on my left hand side trying to keep the gas bubble in the correct place again for the next seven days.
After the Scotland bike ride on the Friday last week I noticed a disturbance in my left eye. This time looked like a dark bubble on the very periphery of my vision.
Now I had been told by the Eye Clinic after my retina detachment back in 2023 that I was at higher risk of it happening again. And if there was any further disturbances, I should go back to them for a check. Of course I kept an eye on it over the weekend which of course made me boss eyed 👀
There was no change but as soon as the eye clinic opened last Monday I went in.
I describe the problem ro the consultant. No waiting forever in accident and emergency this time, which was good. They thought yes this is another retina detachment but all the checks and scanning that they did found nothing wrong. So I was sent home with an appointment for this week to come back and have a peripheral vision check to see if they could find what was happening.
Anyway, to cut a long story short and after trying out every goddamn scanning machine in the Eye Clinic and with two consultants and the head of department all staring intently at the results the final check which involved an ultrasound of my eyeball showed that yes the retina had lifted, but like a blister on the back of my eye Close to the optic nerve. So all hands on deck for an emergency operation same day. Back home now managing the gas bubble in my eye to give it best chance again to heal as my other eye did two and a bit years ago.
Now I’m getting used to this malarkey. I told the surgeon how uncomfortable it was having a big needle pushed to the back of my eyeball to zap me last time and all I can say is this time this surgeon made sure I was properly numb as if I wasn't already before the big needle moment and in fact, the procedure was pain-free with only some very minor scratchy feelings as he’s working deep. Of course my testicles knew what was coming and before the surgeon came anywhere near me those suckers had run away and hidden in my socks - they remembered just how deep the needle was going to go! Now before I lost all vision in my left eye, I do remember seeing what looked like the end of a vacuum pipe moving around inside my eye as the contents including all the floaters were sucked out leaving me with what could best be described as a soft boiled egg without its filling!
Now a couple of days ago I suffered a sudden burst of deja-vu. I don’t know if you ever have those déjà vu moments, but I regularly do. So strong at times it absolutely feels like I’ve lived that exact moment before. And it’s happened twice in the last couple of days. Once at home whilst thinking of others and again whilst in the waiting room at the hospital. But not in that just remembering what happened last time way. A propee oh shit! moment. Here’s a Photo of my face whilst laying on my left-hand side in the living room. Can you tell which eye has been operated on this time?
No, I don’t believe in coincidences. So I checked with the surgeon. Is there any way that the cycling around Scotland and the increased calorific intake to keep me going has any bearing on this matter? He absolutely says NO. This is all related to me being very shortsighted in the past and the reduction of collagen in one’s body as we all get older.
Anyway, everybody’s being great and offering to help except Hairy Jane who laughs at my story of woe I think because he’s losing the knackered eyeball competition to me. Something that I’m rather good at apparently. I am a big baby really. Well I am a bloke suffering from the equivalent of man flu in my eyeballs. I can get up every hour or so for 10 minutes or thereabouts to make a cup of tea, get a bite to eat, go to the toilet, you get my drift.
Next Monday it’s back to see the surgeon to make sure that no follow-up work is needed so I’m going to be a very good boy for the next six days.
I’m currently trying my best to coax my testicles out of my socks, but my boys are both looking back at me with a uh-uh wild look un their hairy eyes poor things
Again another event to write more about probably a little bit later. But I think the words that come to mind are - don’t get old!
Ive just eaten lunch face down with a bowl of home made leek and potato soup that had been mouldering in the fridge for the last few days
I’m staring down into the bowl shovelling the good stuff up towards Audrey II when I notice a drop of the contents of my eye hit the edge of the bowl all snotty like and trickle in 😢🫣
For sure I didn’t see that one coming! 😳🤢
Ciao for now
