LEJOG - I wander lonely as a...

What a glorious day.  I'm just so lucky.  The weather has been fabby and I'm nearly there.  990 miles done.  I'm in the mood to write some light poetry, Wordsworth style...  Here we go...

Not a cloud wandering lonely on high, o'er isles and hills.
When all at once I saw a flock.  A host, of golden sheep'odils.

Beside the loch, beneath the trees.
Skipping and dancing in the breeze.

With imagined guns drawn whilst running away.
You know, the sound of kids with machine guns, at play.

Baaa ha ha ha ha ha!  Gotcha!  I fall off my bike and play dead.
I've been hit in the head with invisible lead.

But oh the ecstasy of looking again for the sea.
The land did play games, laughing, it teased me.

My crap nav told me I was almost there.
But alas the road signs gave a hard stare.

And say 'nah boy nah, its a bit further to the end'.
'We agree yer crap nav is crap and yes, should be binned'.

The land for sure did its best to bollox me.
Dropping baby Garrowby's before me.

The river Naver raced me bend to bend.
My legs were tired, would I make it to the end?

I strained my eyes to see between every Scottish hillock.
Stop looking, it's still 7 miles to the Atlantic you pillock!

Alas the land refused to release its hard grasp.
Hairy Melon and Brooks were deep in my clasp.

The twins were sore but gaily did run.
Balloon Dog was quite numb from dragging his bum.

And finally we all crested a wave o'er the land.
To finally see the North Atlantic, grand!

A deep blue crescent as though a rising new Star!
To end a fantastic day's run, er, from Bonar (Bridge that is...)..

I'm a poet and din't know it..  Here's some piccies of the best day yet!

YAY!  I've finally run out of northings.  I must now make use of my bag of spare eastings, er, to ride east unless I plan to blow bubbles and run into an accidental Russian submarine or two.

It's 11pm and its still twilight!   I'm writing on the laptop in the semi darkness without my room light.   Stoppit now.  I've had many twilight bathroom moments too of late.  Sadly, I've also had a silly accident.

Most of the rubs 'n creams are in the same black bag and all are in very similar tubes.  For the last few nights I've been whipping things out, as one does, just to get the job done cos cycling and writing sure takes up all of my time.  Somewhere on route I've started to clean my teeth with the Ibuprofen Gel.  I can no longer feel my gums and now dribble quite a lot at brekkie.  Sowwy.  On the up side, Hairy Melon has a bright white Colgate'y smile and a new fresh minty breath!

It's another crappy baby Garrowby run across the top of the world towards JOG tomorrow.  As Queen sang - Don't stop me now.  I'm tough, hardened, trained.   I'm the best the SAS canteen could do.  From handling monster hill climbs in Devon and Cornwall to playing crazy dodgems around Birmingham and Manchester and eating mad fish and chip suppers in Telford.

Even if a leg drops off I'll one oar it to the end!

  1. Hi Wayne, congratulations on nearly completing you epic journey. I have loved reading your blog which has resulted in several Walklett gaffaws.
In my post BT days I have been volunteering for the RSPB. What the hell does that have to do with you and LEJOG Ihear you cry?
Well I've become very adept in the use of bull bars, augers (both manual and powered), post hole diggers and prise bars so if you need help removing brooks from the hairy melon I feel its only right that I should volunteer my services to you !

    Best of luck Mike

    1. Hey Mike! Thanks for joining me on the journey. You always knew I suspect that I was irresponsibly mad. Don't worry my friend, I separated them this evening with a sound akin to a cork popping out of a bottle! Sadly they'll be in each others arms again tomorrow :-)
